Lawn Restoration

General Lawn Restoration

Maine is known for its beautiful, snowy winters but those snowfalls. The snow is beautiful but can leave a lawn looking less-than-ideal come spring, and over time, without proper care, your lawn will find itself in need of a little extra care to restore it to its luscious, green state.

The first season of lawn restoration will be a messy process but don’t fear, with Grass Geek you are in good hands. Phase 1 of our restoration process puts a lot of material into the surface, which can stir things up like weed seed. The lawn’s appearance will fluctuate as the new grass grows in before crabgrass takes over for July and August.

We utilize the crabgrass as a surface mulch for the Fall seeding. As it begins to die back in Phase 2 of the process, the existing grass and seedlings will slowly fill in. After this, the lawn will have a solid turf foundation where crabgrass can be controlled immediately the next Spring and your lawn will begin growing back in.

Watering

Our team is very precise with watering to ensure your turf stays hydrated and healthy. Here are some recommendations for keeping your lawn watered and luscious.

Our experts know that the goal with watering is to keep the surface wet but not soaked to the point of having a muddy mess and that seed needs to take in and hold onto enough water to swell and initiate its germination process without suffocating under constant standing water.

As this all happens at the surface we recommend 20-30 minute waterings 2-3 times a day. This may not be feasible for most people since they don’t have an irrigation system. That is where GrassGeek comes in. If you are interested in learning about our irrigation services click here. If you don’t have the time for watering this frequently, and an irrigation system is not in your budget, a good morning and afternoon watering could do the trick.

Remember the old-fashioned fan sprinklers you used to jump through as a child? Well, when it comes to hand watering that is what we recommend. Get the biggest you can buy so that it covers the largest area of your lawn as possible. Missed spots will dry out and turn brown.

When you are hand watering your lawn, place your focus should on bare areas, strawed in sections, or any weak areas of the lawn.  Let Mother Nature handle the majority of the lawn that has turf cover for you.

Mowing

Lawns should be mowed at the highest setting possible for the entire season and we have just the right, top-of-the-line equipment to get the job done, our longer leaf blades mean longer roots and better ability to fill in laterally. As your restored lawn begins to grown in you will need to baby it before winter arrives. Bag mowing is also recommended to keep the surface from clumping and suffocating the seedlings and young turf as it starts to sprout, as things begin to fill in and mature a switch to mulch mowing can occur but be sure to avoid all straw areas as best as possible to keep the cover over the planted seed. Once things have germinated and are filling in the straw is less important but at the start of the growth process it should be treated delicately.
